The Artist: Gathie Falk (1928-)

Gathie Falk is one of Canada's respected and beloved living artists.
Born in Manitoba, Falk moved to Vancouver with her family in 1947 where she started working as a school teacher. During this time, she began formal art training at the University of British Columbia summer course under Jock MacDonald. In 1965, she decided to become a full time artist.

Falk transforms the everyday items into works that feel surreal and dreamlike related to the personal symbols they may carry. Her work reinvents the familiar, aligned loosely with the traditions of Surrealism, Funk, Fluxus and Pop Art. Now in her 90s, her expansive work covers a range of mediums, from paintings, ceramic sculptures, installation and performance art.

She is a winner of the 2013 Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts, a recipient of the Order of Canada, the Gershon Iskowitz Prize, the Order of British Columbia and the Governor General’s Award in Visual Arts.
