The Artist: John Metcalf & Tony Calzetta (Canadian, 1945)

Tony Calzetta is a Canadian artist who works mainly with canvas and paper. He published three major livres d'artistes including the work The Acts of Kindness and of Love in collaboration with composer and short story novelist John Metcalf.

In Calzetta's own words: “My art explores drawing originating from my early paintings grounded within linear abstraction. My images are composed of shapes and forms constantly evolving from a highly personal visual vocabulary which started with subconscious doodling and automatic drawing. Over time I consciously incorporated external visual influences."

The Story:

The Special Edition is part of a sold-out one of a kind series. Laminated to the cover is one of the cancelled woodblocks from the twelve additional prints. It includes the first print pulled from the woodblock on the cover of its box as well as a sheet of the author's handwritten manuscript.

Acts of Kindness and of Love originally was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, part of a series called 'A Sense of Place.' John Metcalf describes his idea behind the book: "I had decided to use the techniques of fiction to write a hybrid creation which was a part memoir, part essay and meditation on the stone farmhouse in Delta we lived in, on the surrounding countryside, and on the enchanted nature of the world children inhabit; I might as well have titled the piece: 'A Prayer for My Daughter.'
