The Artist: Marjorie Pigott (1904-1990) was a post-war Canadian watercolorist who successfully rose to acclaim developing her own distinctive style of semi-abstract wet-into-wet watercolours. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Pigott's talent was recognized by her Japanese mother at a young age. She was placed to study under master artists at the Manga School, founded in the 15th century.

Pigott and her family left Japan at the start of World War II. They immigrated to Vancouver in 1940 first, then settling in Toronto. From 1955-1965, Pigott taught the Manga technique in Canada and exhibited her work in several solo and group shows at Roberts Gallery (Toronto), Kensington Fine Arts Gallery (Calgary), Wallack Gallery (Ottawa) among others.
