The Artist: Lawrence Tobe was born in Amarillo, Texas, but grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. He was awarded a full scholarship by the University of Louisville, where he completed a Bachelor (1954) and Master (1957) degree in Fine Arts. From 1958 – 1964, Mr. Tobe taught art in public schools in Dade County, Florida. From 1964 – 1994, he taught at the Fine Arts Department at Broward College in Davie, Florida.

Mr. Tobe’s travels and life experiences are very much reflected in his paintings, especially in the floral and architecture aspects of his works. Duane Hanson, former Florida Ambassador of the Arts, described Mr. Tobe’s work as “relatively large, so that the expressive gestures are quite fluid, reflecting Mr. Tobe’s strong interest and knowledge of the botanical world.” Mr. Tobe’s work dazzles the eye because of his extraordinary use of acrylics on canvas. His neo-expressionist paintings have appeared in over three dozen art shows and received acclaim by critics such as Griffin Smith at the Miami Herald. Mrs. Smith stated “color, composition, and brushwork combine with a lyric impact that is quite remarkable.”

Mr. Tobe now resides in Tallahassee (FL) and Quitman (GA). He has participated in shows in Florida, California, Georgia and Kentucky.

The Story: Excerpt from the Sun Sentinel, July 13, 1986, by Paul Heidelberg

Out behind the studio that sits behind artist Lawrence Tobe`s tree-shaded home on the outskirts of Davie lies his ``graveyard.`` The graveyard is a testament to artistic change, for amidst the lush foilage that surrounds Tobe`s studio lie battered canvases, smashed wooden sculptures and other scorned relics of Tobe`s creativity. ``I`ve always felt my next work is going to be the best,`` said Tobe, who has taught art at Broward Community College Central Campus in Davie for 21 years. ``You don`t want to have a fixation on your past work -- you have to move forward. My point of view is that the next series will be the best.``

Tobe doesn`t trash all his older work. His home is filled with paintings and sculptures from throughout his artistic career. Two of his wooden sculptures are on display at the Davie studio of internationally-known sculptor Duane Hanson (Tobe had a one-man show at Hanson`s studio in 1983). The pieces that end up in the graveyard are ones that just didn`t turn out the way he wanted them to, Tobe said.
