The Artist: Tin-Yum Lau was born in Hong Kong in 1941. His father Shi-ho, a painter and calligrapher, taught him the art of calligraphy. He joined the Institute of Fine Arts in Hong Kong in 1958 where he received training in Western art.
In 1965 he left for France and enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and worked at the studio of the painter Brianchon. He took advantage of his stay in France from 1965 to 1969 to visit several European countries. In 1969, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Galerie ACTUA in Paris.
Back in Hong Kong in 1969, he presented the same solo exhibition at the City Hall Exhibition Hall. Soon after, he decided to move to Canada. In Montreal, he joined the Graphic Design Workshop directed by Richard Lacroix in 1970. He became known for his artistic production and was invited in 1974 as an artist resident in Sweden by the Canada-Scandinavia Foundation. He was a founding member of the Conseil de la gravure du Québec in 1979. He was also a founding member of the Atelier Circulaire in Montreal (Graphic Arts Research Workshop). In 1982, he organized a trip to China with 18 Québec artists Of a cultural exchange.
From 1975 to 1996, he received numerous scholarships from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Quebec Ministry of Culture for research and exhibition projects both in Canada and abroad. On numerous occasions, he has exhibited in galleries in Canada his works in painting, printmaking, photography, calligraphy and installation.
Since 1980, while continuing his career as an artist, he is also a professor in visual arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Visual Arts in 1999. Since 2001, Exhibition and diffusion center in the arts: the ESPACE gallery in Montreal.
