The Artist: Joachim Gauthier (Canadian, 1897-1988)

Joachim Gauthier was born in North Bay where his talent was directed early in his life when he apprenticed as a sign writer in his teens.  He later studied with J.E.H. MacDonald and Franklin Carmichael.He was a commercial artist for Sampson Matthews Ltd. for over 37 years. Carmichael, Casson and he were charter members of The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC).  

The Story: Gauthier also accompanied Group of Seven member A.J. Casson on sketching trips, and he exhibited with the Group. He was commissioned by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection at Kleinburg to do portraits of Tom Thomson, the Group and some of their contemporaries.
