The Artist: Patrice Wolput (Canadian, 1963 -)

Patrice Wolput was born in Sabrevois, an agricultural town some fifty kilometers from Montreal. Growing up on his parent's farm, he soon manifested a love of nature and a talent for drawing.

After earning a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal, Patrice explored a number of different avenues related to his art. He worked as a set designer for television and scene painter for cinema, while continuing his work as a painter in his free time.

His fascination with nature led him to devote himself entirely to wildlife painting. The intimate link between an animal and its habitat holds particular fascination for him and his heightened and intuitive sense of this is obvious in his work.

The artist has taken part in a number of exhibitions in Canada and Europe. He received first prize from Ducks Unlimited in 1999 as artist of the year in Canada and a bursary from the Elizabeth Greenshields foundation. In 2002, he has been chosen to create the collectors stamp for the Fauna foundation of Quebec. In 2003, another of his paintings was showcased on a collector's stamp and a lithograph, both issued by the Wildlife Habitat Canada organization.

Patrice Wolput writes:
"From a very early age on, my greatest pleasure was to explore nature while living on the family farm. I especially enjoyed discovering isolated corners on our land and areas that seemed yet untouched by man...discovering that which remains unseen at first glance.
That’s how my passion to express what I had felt and observed came to grow as well as the need to share this passion with others through painting.

My goal is to reproduce the exact atmosphere of a particular scene and to capture those elusive moments of intense beauty and aliveness in nature. To paint only those vivid images, those moments in nature that capture me and stay with me. My need to paint and express my emotions this way has only increased over the years."
