The Artist: Shelley Mansel (Canadian)

Shelley Mansel, a native of British Columbia, studied at Fraser Valley College and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax where she now resides as a full-time artist.

Mansel's landscapes are developed from a mosaic of both actual imaginary images yet are distinctly reminiscent of particular place for each person who views them. Memory of place is what gives the paintings familiarity - the specificity of place is inconsequential. Her clever compositions provide viewers an opportunity to appreciate a recognizable landscape but one that also verges on the threshold of abstraction.

Shelley often use a subdued palette which evokes an aged quality; a sense of modd and drama. Her use of a saturated palette produces studies of colour, pattern, and light within the floral and landscape subjects.

Mansel's works are held in numerous private collections in Canada, Germany, the United States, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom and in permanent collections including St. Mary's University, Halifax and UBC, Vancouver. Mansel has received three Nova Scotia Creation Grants and a Presentation Grant and has been a juror on the selection committee for the Nova Scotia Culture Division/Grants to Individuals program. Her work is represented by: Gallery B (Castine, Maine) and Harvest Gallery, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She currently lives and works in Upper Musquodoboit, in the rural countryside of Nova Scotia.

The Story: This painting was originally purchased from Ingram Gallery in Yorkville, Toronto, who used to represent this artist. It was featured in the 2007 exhibition "Divining II."

Mansel's works have been reviewed in newspapers and blogs in Halifax and Toronto and featured in House & Home magazine and on HGTV. She has self-published two books and is included in the first volume of “From Land and Sea: Nova Scotia’s Contemporary Landscape Artists”. Shelley was also chosen as a marquee artist for the CBC’s “Sharing the View” calendar (2012).
