  • Condition: good, cleaned and reframed in original gold leaf frames from 1960s with new mats

The Story:  Original 1800s botanical prints. Botanical prints were incredibly popular in the 1800s, with discoveries of biology and advancements in printing cultivating an interest in botanical collections. There are similar prints in the marketplace engraved by Ignatius Alberti and Ferdinand Bernhard Vietz to whom the work may be attributed.

One basic difference between a botanical artist and a flower painter is intention: the botanical artist wishes his (or mostly her) work to be useful to the scientist...botanically accurate, often displaying roots, seeds and buds as well as flowers and leaves.
