The Artist: Jerry Norman Uelsmann (American 1934-2022)

Jerry Norman Uelsmann was highly regarded photographer who pioneered analog photomontage and surrealist darkroom technique. Often regarded as the spiritual forefather of modern digital tools like Photoshop, Uelsmann spent over six decades creating seamless, mind-bending compositions using exclusively traditional black-and-white film and multiple darkroom enlargers. To create a single final image, he would map out and blend together components from up to a dozen different negatives, utilizing complex burning, dodging, and masking techniques. In doing so, he famously rejected the prevailing mid-century doctrine of "pre-visualization"—championed by contemporaries like Ansel Adams—and instead coined the term "post-visualization," arguing that the true creative process of a photograph begins after the camera's shutter clicks, treating the darkroom as a visual laboratory.

He taught photography at the University of Florida for nearly forty years and received numerous elite honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1967. Today, his iconic works are preserved globally in permanent collections like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

David's Dream, is a perfect example of his signature style, superimposing a reclining female figure amidst swirling clouds over a centered landscape of stone wells and human figures. Across his legendary career, Uelsmann used this dream-like vocabulary to weave recurring symbolic motifs—such as floating eyes, roots, boats, and disembodied figures—to create psychological landscapes that subverted reality.
