  • Condition: very good, some minor dirt, water stain on lower back of board
  • Frame: vintage wooden 1950's style with a washed grey/beige over gold with rocaille corners

The Artist: Johann-Woldemar (John) Saarniit (1902-1982, Estonian/Canadian)

Johann Saarniit was born in Estonia in May 1909. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Estonia and furthered his studies in Germany, Poland, Finland and Sweden. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 entering in Halifax. Remnants of his bio are attached to the back of the painting.

The Story: Saarniit had his own art gallery in Toronto in Sunnybrook Plaza on Eglinton Avenue. In the 1950's his work sold for approximately $45.00 a painting. He is known for Canadian landscapes and his use of colour. He attached a paper bio to the backs of each painting he sold.  Now his paintings can be found at fine art auctions and galleries.
