The Artist: Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985)

Marc Chagall is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Considered a pioneer of the Modern art movement, his vast collection of timeless masterpieces are a rich legacy that continues to influence the world of Modern art.

Chagall was born July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Russia. In his early life, he attended local Jewish religious schools whose teachings would influence much of his later work. In 1910 Chagall moved to Paris and studied in a small art academy. Incorporating dreamlike imagery with hints of Cubism, popular in France at the time, Chagall created some of his most lasting work.

After returning to Vitebsk in 1914, the outbreak of World War I trapped Chagall in Russia. He settled in Vitebsk, where he was appointed Commissar for Art in 1918, but he relinquished the position in 1920 and moved his family to Moscow. During World War II, Chagall fled to the United States and returned to France in 1947. 

In 1951 he visited Israel and executed his first sculptures. The following year the artist traveled in Greece and Italy. During the 1960s Chagall continued to travel widely, often in association with large-scale commissions he received. Among these were windows for the synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center, Jerusalem (installed in 1962); a ceiling for the Paris Opéra (installed in 1964); a window for the United Nations building, New York (installed in 1964); murals for the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (installed in 1967); and windows for the cathedral in Metz, France (installed in 1968). An exhibition of the artist’s work from 1967 to 1977 was held at the Musée du Louvre, Paris, in 1977–78, and a major retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1985. Chagall died on March 28, 1985, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.

The Story: This print was created in 1962 and issued by Galerie Maeght in their publication Derrière le miroir, No. 132. This issue of the publication contained two lithographs by Chagall. Started in 1946, the Galerie published the first volume of the modern art periodical that accompanied each of the Galerie's exhibitions and included original prints, usually lithographs, by their featured artists.Over the next thirty-five years, the Galerie produced 253 issues. Published up to six times a year, Derrière le miroir featured acclaimed artists that included Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Paul Riopelle.
