The Artist: The artist responsible for this painting remains unidentified; however, the work demonstrates the skill of a competent nineteenth-century marine painter familiar with the British tradition of maritime landscape painting. During the Victorian period, accomplished professional artists and studio painters frequently produced copies after popular Royal Academy paintings to satisfy collector demand, and many such works were left unsigned. Although the execution does not exhibit the distinctive virtuosity associated with Stanfield himself, the painting possesses sufficient quality to suggest it was produced by a trained artist working within the circle of British marine painting in the mid- to late nineteenth century rather than as a later decorative reproduction.
