DIANE LINGENFELTER "SERIES OF 4"

Diane Lingenfelter is a prominent, Toronto-based Canadian contemporary painter and artist who has been exhibiting her work professionally for over 40 years. Operating out of her personal studio in the Junction area of West Toronto, she is highly regarded for her expressive, non-linear approach to painting. Her background includes a rigorous education at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University), where she studied Fine Arts Painting and Experimental Arts from 1982 to 1987. During her time there, she graduated with Honours and was awarded the prestigious W.O. Forsyth Scholarship for Painting.

Lingenfelter’s unique artistic philosophy centers deeply on the movement, design, and interaction of the human figure. Rather than planning a piece from a fixed, pre-determined concept, she treats painting as an evolving, highly intuitive process that requires space, time, and deep introspection. Her work frequently explores themes of construction and deconstruction, utilizing a powerful command of light, shade, and visual subtleties. She often describes the ultimate goal of her creative process as capturing a distinct "iconic" and "sudden, ironic presence."

Diane Lingenfelter’s black ink on paper artwork featuring bold pops of red highlights a highly distinct, celebrated side of her portfolio. While she is widely known for her rich gallery canvases, these intimate, mixed-media works on paper focus purely on her obsession with the human gesture and figure. Using stark, fluid black ink lines to trace the dynamic curves and postures of nudes and stylized characters, she introduces sharp elements like acrylic red paint or collage to break up the monochrome space. Pieces from these collections perfectly capture her stated goal of creating a "sudden, ironic presence". By contrasting raw, expressive ink brushstrokes against minimalist backgrounds, the vibrant red paint acts as a deliberate focal point, whether defining a facial feature, highlighting an abstract boundary, or adding emotional tension.
