The Artist: Paul Fairley (Canadian, 1948-1991)
Paul Fairley was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario Canada. He graduated and subsequently instructed at The Minneapolis College of Art & Design. He returned to Canada in 1976 to forge his career as a commercially successful sculptor.
Fairley’s prodigious and eclectic talent earned him a major international reputation. He executed commissions for the Canadian Equestrian Team, Time International, The Canadian Federated Wildlife Society and Abitibi Price Incorporated. Fairley’s work has been shown in over 80 galleries throughout the continental United States, Western Europe and Hawaii. His work is represented in important private and corporate collections in both Canada and the United States.
Erich Knoespel from Artcast Inc, one of Canada's few art foundries, said this: "The finished look of all (Fairley's) 'editioned' works received the same attention to detail as his originals. Paul had an in depth understanding of the lost wax casting process...."
The Manufacturer: Artmark, established in 1982, commissioned sculptures from prominent sculpture artists to produce high quality multiples in bronze. Editioning was specific: API was created by Artmark for the artist, APII for Artmark and no more than four AP's for any sculpture was allowed. Artwork offered sculptures in editions of 250 or 999. Artmark created all the waxes and did the finishing in their studio on Adelaide Street in Toronto. Artwork also created all the patina finishes and engraving details.
One of the past partners in Artmark has decided to part with part of his art collection. Juliet comes from his collection.
The Story: Alexander Grant, who was the Artistic Director of the National Ballet in 1982, signed off on the wax mould for Juliet, so every detail of her—the hands, the legs and the en point balance are precise. In 1983, Juliet was featured in Architectural Digest magazine which led to the sale of over 120 sculptures within a few days. She was extremely popular and now difficult to find.
