The Artist:
Toller Cranston (1949–2015) was a Canadian painter and multidisciplinary artist, best known for combining a celebrated figure-skating career with a prolific visual art practice. Born in Hamilton, he studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal before pursuing art professionally.
Although internationally recognized for revolutionizing men’s figure skating with his theatrical, expressive style, Cranston considered painting his true vocation. He began exhibiting his artwork in the late 1960s and went on to hold more than 250 exhibitions worldwide. His paintings are known for their dreamlike imagery, rich colours, and symbolic, often autobiographical themes.
Later in life, Cranston lived in San Miguel de Allende, where he continued to create art prolifically. His legacy endures as a unique figure who bridged sport and visual art through a highly personal and imaginative style.
