The Artist: Claire Marie Shoniker (b. 1931, Toronto) is a defining mid-century voice in Canadian modernist landscape, printmaking, and still life art. Mentored at the Ontario College of Art by Group of Seven legend Arthur Lismer and developed a close personal friendship with painter Paraskeva Clark, Shoniker masterfully fused Canada’s rugged wilderness traditions with the structured, post-impressionist sensibilities of Paul Cézanne. Her expressive woodland interiors, intimate figures, and complex still lifes span an impressive range of mediums from rich oils on Masonite to delicate drypoint prints.

Also known as Claire Shoniker Brickus, she initially worked as a school teacher before dedicating herself to her art, and turning into an institutional trailblazer, she became an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and the Canadian Society of Graphic Art.

Today, Shoniker's award-winning pieces are preserved in Canada’s most prestigious institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery, making her an enduring, highly accessible staple for discerning collectors of Canadian art history.
