The Artist: MANNY NEUBACHER (Canadian, c.1970)

Manny Neubacher is a prominent Canadian contemporary artist, gallerist, art consultant, and creative director based in Toronto, Ontario, who grew up immersed in the fine art world as the son of celebrated artists Gerda and Fred Neubacher. After completing his studies in Fine Arts at Huron University College, he developed a distinct abstract and mixed-media painting style that explores the complex, liminal space between creation and destruction, light and dark, and perfection versus imperfection. His raw, heavily layered canvases have been showcased across major venues, with notable solo and group exhibitions including Throughsixteen at the Royal Ontario Museum and the CBC Broadcast Centre, as well as showcases at the London Regional Art Gallery. Beyond easel painting, he has also worked on large-scale sculptural commissions and institutional installations, such as water-wall collaborations at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and the Zen Sculpture Garden at Knox Farm State Park in New York.

Over the past few decades, Neubacher has successfully transitioned into a major tastemaker, curator, and advisor within the Toronto art scene, dedicating much of his energy to expanding the commercial market for independent, modern artists. In the early 2000s, he co-launched a namesake family gallery space in Toronto, hosting foundational solo exhibitions such as Plucking the Wings of Angels and Artless. This evolved in 2011 into Neubacher Shor Contemporary, a highly regarded gallery on Emerson Avenue in Toronto's West End arts hub that he co-directed alongside his wife, fashion stylist Anya Shor, to nurture and showcase exciting, multi-disciplinary Canadian and international contemporary talent.

Recognizing a disconnect between younger generations and the often-intimidating traditional gallery landscape, Neubacher co-founded The Art Stylists in 2009. Operating as a specialized curatorial consultancy, the firm scours local studios to place original, high-quality contemporary art into private homes, commercial spaces, film sets, and advertising campaigns, helping clients build collections regardless of their budget. Expanding on this philosophy that original art should be an essential, character-defining cornerstone of any interior space, he also serves as the Creative Director for Hale Muskoka, where he oversees art curation, spatial design, and event concepts.
